The following is a post by one of our elders, summarizing the content from this past Sunday's Adult Bible Study Hour. In the class, we are going through eight different aspects of our Planting Joy vision. Consider joining us this Sunday at 9:30am in the sanctuary.
If you ask why we exist as Five Points Community Church, we have to answer most foundationally that our existence is owing to a vision of God. We are not defined mainly by a building or an address, by a shared history or a future set of plans. Most radically we are the handiwork of God. Paul says, “For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them” (Ephesians 2:10).
Since we are made by him, we exist to glorify him in all aspects of life. So we ask, how can we show God’s supreme worth in all facets of life, “… that in everything God may be glorified through Jesus Christ”? There’s the answer: by trusting in, hoping in, and being satisfied in his son, the Lord Jesus Christ. God is a God of unmixed joy in himself (1 Timothy 1:11). And we are made in his image such that we find our purest joy in all that he is for us in his son. The most precious realities—such as grace, truth, forgiveness, righteousness and eternal life—are all found in Christ alone.
Having found our highest joy in Christ, we cannot contain it. We must declare among the nations that our God reigns in Jesus Christ! So our mission statement reads, “Five Points Community Church exists to glorify God through the Spirit by pursuing joy in Christ alone so that our neighbors and the nations worship him with us both now and forever.”
“Planting Joy” is simply our way of fleshing out that mission statement into a vision of what life could be like here at Five Points as we seek to glorify God with all of our hearts, souls, minds, and strength. Over the next several weeks of this summer season, you will continue to hear from many of our Five Points elders as they unfold aspects of this vision called Planting Joy.
This multi-faceted vision of life together will help answer a host of practical questions such as how to spend the Lord’s funds he has loaned to us, how to use our time, resources, opportunities, and gifts to maximize God’s glory. It will suggest a path forward in maintaining and expanding our current facility. This vision will guide us in almost any decision we encounter.
Our presenting of this vision to you, the beloved flock at Five Points, is our way of seeking to fulfill Habakkuk 2:2-3, “Write the vision; make it plain on tablets, so he may run who reads it. For still the vision awaits its appointed time; it hastens to the end – it will not lie. If it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.”
Waiting for the vision with you,
