A Forward-Looking Statement

In a world of turmoil and doubt, what constitutes true hope and faith for you as a Christian? What are you looking forward to? Is it an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading (1 Peter 1:4) or is your outlook contingent on circumstances—up and down with the stock market?
As Christians, our time here on earth is short but significant. We rejoice in Christ but struggle at times with doubt and discouragement, especially when we suffer for our faith. Interestingly, just as we are called to salvation we are also called to suffer because of Christ (1 Peter 2:20). Thankfully, this doesn’t occur outside of God’s sovereignty, nor does it occur without significant help for us as we go through it.
The Lord ordains that the elders of the churches shepherd the flock in a manner that reflects how Christ shepherds his people. Elders bear a special and joyous burden to lead with you willing and eager hearts and provide you with an example of Christ. Even though elders are mere men, their purpose is to constantly remind you about what we are called to: an inheritance that is imperishable, undefiled, and unfading. By God’s grace the elders will always set the living hope of the gospel in front of you for encouragement and strength.
Reflect on the person and work of Christ, especially the sufferings he endured as he went willingly to his crucifixion. Consider also the mighty hand of God in rescuing his people during the Exodus. Stay on the alert, resist the devil, and place any and all anxiety on Christ. “And after you have suffered a little while, the God of all grace, who has called you to his eternal glory in Christ, will himself restore, confirm, strengthen, and establish you” (1 Peter 5:10).
